Rebecca Hagen is a graphic designer, photographer and published author. She is the Principal of Sky Lake Design Studio, and provides print and digital design services for Public Relations and Marketing. She lives in Wesley Chapel, FL with her husband Guy and three cats: Salsa, Finn and Kylie.
I was the kid in high school who was always doodling in the margins. I designed the programs for the one-act-plays. I held my first “art exhibition” at the age of 5 (I taped pencil drawings to my bedroom door and sold them to my parents for 5 cents each). Good color sense is my superpower.
I’m a graphic designer.
At my design studio Sky Lake Design, I specialize in creating print and web layouts that communicate. I leverage knowledge of color, typesetting, typography, imagery and layout to effectively disseminate client messages. I love working with PR and Marketing firms and particularly enjoy building websites around Public Affairs issues.
In addition to designing all manner of things for clients, I co-authored a popular beginning designer’s textbook. “White Space is Not Your Enemy: A Beginner’s Guide to Communicating Visually through Graphic, Web and Multimedia Design,” (Focal Press) is in it’s second edition, with a third edition coming out in September 2016. It’s being used in Mass Communications departments across the country, and has been translated into four languages.
About Sky Lake Studio
I founded Sky Lake Design Studio in 2012 to offer agency-caliber graphic design without the ridiculous price tag. My approach is simple. I apply classic knowledge of color, type, imagery and layout to create graphic design work that is unique, engaging and purposeful—and actually works for the client.
My Sky Lake Design portfolio includes complex print design (magazines, annual reports), web design (rich media, responsive web design), branding, presentations decks, proposal design and creation of multimedia assets for general web and social media sites and social media campaigns.

A beginner’s guide to communicating visually through graphic, web & multimedia design
White Space was born from Public Relations and Advertising Design lectures at the University of South Florida School of Mass Communications. My co-author, Dr. Kim Golombisky, and I saw a need for a single, easily readable volume to teach mass comm students “design for non-designers.” Most books on the market were either too simple in their approach, or were geared towards graphic designers-in-training and were too complex for fledgling communications students.
The resulting volume is a design “how-to” for students and professionals who need to produce the occasional design piece but don’t have a full art degree. Readers of White Space will also gain a vocabulary to effectively communicate with professional designers when outside help is needed for a project.
In addition to co-authoring the copy, I designed the cover, the page layouts and the vast majority of the illustrations and examples inside.
The third edition will be released in September 2016.
